Notice: Water Discoloration and Treatment Updates
We are aware that some customers are experiencing water discoloration. Our water is safe to drink, but we understand the discoloration is frustrating and aesthetically unpleasant.
What is causing this?
The discoloration is caused by slight elevations in manganese, a naturally occurring mineral. Recent changes in water temperature and the standard chlorine treatment have made this mineral more visible as it travels from our treatment plant to your home.
What we are doing:
- Adjusting treatment: We are actively modifying our treatment processes throughout the day to reduce manganese levels.
- Testing: We are taking regular water samples across the system to monitor our progress.
- Flushing lines: Once the treatment takes full effect, crews will flush water mains across the district to clear out any remaining discoloration.
Please note that these treatment adjustments take time to travel through the system and fully clear the water lines.
Household Tips & Best Practices
- Do Not Boil: Boiling your water will not remove manganese or clear the discoloration.
- Infant Care: Out of an abundance of caution, it is best practice to use distilled water, filtered water, or a reverse osmosis system for infants.
- Laundry Advisory: Manganese can stain clothing, especially whites. We strongly recommend delaying laundry until the discoloration has completely cleared.
Summary
Water color alone does not determine if water is safe to drink. While this slight elevation in manganese is an aesthetic issue rather than a health hazard, we are working continuously to resolve it. We appreciate your patience as we work to restore crystal-clear water to your home.
